I’m not sure if you know this, but Portland has only had TEN women City Council members in its history. This fall, I plan to be elected as the eleventh.
I not only intend to be the eleventh woman to sit on Portland City Council, but I also am advocating for women across our city to help them get elected.
Inspired by my former employers, Ellen Malcolm, the founder of EMILY’s List, Oregon Congresswomen Elizabeth Furse and Darlene Hooley, I want to be a leader for women and non-binary people, like my child, in our city. Throughout my career, I’ve been focused on helping women win elections – and I’m not stopping now.
Women leaders work hard. We clean up messes. We care about everyone. We bring people together and hold people together when the going gets tough. We get stuff done.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday night said, “Something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it? A familiar feeling that’s been buried too deep for too long. You know what I’m talking about? It’s the contagious power of hope!”
Friends, we are in a sprint to the November election. This is one of the most important elections in the history of our country and our city. Let’s work hard together for a brighter future.
